As mentioned repeatedly on this blog, the latest data from the Consumer Price Index shows the unjustified increase in gas – as a direct result of commodity prices being speculated beyond supply demand fundamentals – was the main driver of upward pressure on the all-items Consumer Price Index for a fourth consecutive month. This will likely lead to an increase in lending rates in an effort to curb inflation, which rose beyond Bank of Canada expectations.
There continues to be the need for two areas of legislative action by our federal government. First, a weekly public catalogue of Canada’s true supply and demand picture for all carbon based energies (gasoline, diesel/distillate, jet kerosene and propane) as the United States provides each and every Wednesday.
Second, the Canadian government needs to work with all nations at ensuring position limits are established by swap traders to ensure the fragile commodities markets are free from speculative positions that drive up values artificially for producers and consumers without regard to legitimate hedging based on market fundamentals.
Without action, let alone interest by policy makers, we will all continue to pay dearly — beyond the gas pumps — for our homes and business.

As we have argued in this post since 2008, it is time for the federal government to provide truth in numbers regarding the real supply and demand picture in Canada.
Recently, the International Energy Agency held an oil price information workshop where it was suggested that greater transparency of supply and demand data and a global effort to improve regulation of over- the-counter markets are needed to avoid excessive swings in oil prices.
