With the price of fuel at all time highs, it’s really important to find ways to lower fuel expenses. Small changes can make a big difference. One such way to improve gas efficiency is to avoid idling your car for long periods of time.
There could be many reasons why you let your car idle: wanting to get into a cool car when it’s hot outside; waiting for someone; sitting in a traffic jam, etc.
Idling can use a 1 to 2 litres of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and use of the air conditioner. You may not think that is much, but you might be surprised to know idling just 5 to 10 minutes a day can waste up to 150 litres of gas per year!
Tips to save fuel:
- Turn off your engine when your vehicle is parked. It only takes a few seconds worth of fuel to restart your vehicle but you can save a lot of fuel with this practice.
- Letting your vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient.
- During idling periods of several minutes or more, where it is safe to do so, switch off your engine to stop fuel consumption and emissions completely.
